Us ladies in the office like a biscuit or two, but for National Fitness Day we are taking a step back and seeing how we can make our lifestyles healthier. While we always keep up-to-date with our private hire vehicle engines, we don’t pay much attention to ourselves. Just think, our cars must have a valid MOT, certificate of compliance, tax and insurance just to run on the road safely. But what about us? Who’s checking up on our own engines?
The UK is seeing rapid growth in the fitness industry and is now home to over 7,000 gyms, excluding boutique studios and community recreation facilities. With millennials becoming increasingly interested in holistic approaches too, more digital apps are popping up making fitness on-demand and convenient wherever you are. Here are a few tips we’ve come up with – will you join us?
Go for a walk at lunchtime
Did you know the NHS recommends you get in 10,000 steps a day? That isn’t going to happen in the office, so take a power walk on your lunch break. If you’re one of those people who works through your lunch break or feels guilty about going out, push yourself, as even ten minutes of brisk walking can have numerous health benefits.
Be aware of your posture
If you sit down for most of the day, take note of how you're sitting as incorrect posture can have negative health effects in the future. Reduce back pain by adjusting your chair so your back is properly supported. Also, rest your feet flat on the floor, place your screen directly in front of you at eye level and take regular breaks to stretch.
Encourage each other
Getting healthy as a team is a great motivator. Whether that’s at work or with a friend, partnering up gives you an obligation to turn up and encourage each other. But if you’re like us and have a constant flow of cake and biscuits in the office, you will need to practice discipline. Do this by removing temptation from your desk and going for fruit if you fancy something sweet.
Move your body in the morning
Exercising in the morning is so beneficial. Not only will it make you feel accomplished before turning up to work, it will also encourage you to eat healthier during the day, release endorphins and boost your energy. Why not set up a WhatsApp group to motivate each other to get up and moving, whether it’s for a run, yoga or an indoor workout?
