As part of the business travel industry, we know how important it is to look for ways to make our sector more sustainable. The transport sector in the UK is responsible for around a third of all greenhouse gas emissions, making it one of the top contributors globally. But, what can we do to make a difference?
As a chauffeur service, we are aware of our responsibility to make travel for our clients as sustainable and practical as possible. While it may not be possible to have a fleet of electric cars at this moment in time, we are positive that 2020 is going to be a great step forward in making our service more eco-friendly for our clients.
Therefore, we thought we would share with you our sustainable business travel plan to make Milton Executive Cars greener in 2020. From encouraging car shares to looking into how we can reduce waste both in our cars and in the office, here is what we have set out in the new year.
You may not know this, but we actively encourage car sharing when we see two passengers who are travelling from the same pick-up point. Although we know this may not suit everyone, we will give this option as both an eco-friendly and cost effective alternative. If you use us regularly for business travel, you can also ask us if any colleagues of yours are travelling on the same dates and we can get in touch with them to see if they would like to car share.
Hybrid and electric cars are an inevitable part of our future. Although we currently do not have any on our fleet, it is one of our main business objectives of 2020 to introduce them as an option for our clients.
According to Sustainable News, fleet operators are responsible for 54 per cent of new car purchases in the UK, meaning that they can facilitate the shift to cleaner cars on a large scale. The impact of the cars fleet operators purchase does not stop there either, as the majority of company cars are sold into the second hand market, meaning they control a large proportion of the supply of used vehicles in the private market.
As a private hire operator ourselves, we take this very seriously, and know how important it is both to you and the planet to change to hybrid and electric vehicles in the future. Therefore, we want to assure our clients we are looking into this in a way to make it both practical and economical for us all.
As some of you are aware, we changed our booking system at the end of 2019 to one that is completely online. Doing this has enabled us to cut down on our waste in the office drastically. Whereas before we would allocate work to our drivers by creating boards and sticking jobs onto it manually, we now do all our allocation online, meaning we have hardly any paper waste.
As well as this, all our invoices and confirmations are sent by email with no paper copies made. This is the same for all driver documents which we have transferred onto our online system, which enables us to keep up-to-date with checks, MOT tests and other licensing documents.
When we allocate bookings to our drivers, we ensure we give it to the chauffeur closest to the pick-up point. We try to do this as much as possible and as we can track our vehicles, we are able to allocate them jobs that come in last minute near to where they are. Reducing mileage for our drivers results in less emissions as well as quicker and more efficient journey’s for our clients.
As part of the business travel sector, we are aware of our responsibility to make changes to become as sustainable as possible. In the next few years, we are going to implement greener choices both in the office and in our fleet and although it will be a gradual process, we are confident we will be one of the green leaders in the Cambridgeshire private hire industry.
